This sumi salad is one of my favorite summer staples. It’s super easy to make and tastes amazing. The dressing, however, may be a little bit challenging for some people. It’s a blend of soy, ginger, honey, and lime juice. I love that it’s not too sweet or too salty. It’s great with fresh fruit and veggies and has great texture.
The recipe I’m about to describe is the sumi salad with sesame seeds that I’ve been making for a few years now. I first came across this recipe in a book called “The Art of Cooking” by Robert W. Smith.
I love this salad. It’s a great way to use up the last of the summer produce and it’s very refreshing. I like to add avocado, pine nuts, and green beans to the mix. These additions are delicious, and they give the salad a nice crunch. If you decide to try this recipe, here is my guide for making it.
The recipe that Im going to share is from the book, but its a good one. I like to use fresh sesame seeds and add a fresh garlic clove to the mix. Add the greens, tomatoes, and avocado, and youve got yourself a sumi salad. If you would like to make it your own and add a few ingredients for variety, here is how one would go about it.
I had a lot of problems with the recipe I shared, but I actually enjoyed it. The greens were a little tough for me to digest, so I felt like I could have added more salt to make them more appealing. Plus when you add ingredients like tomatoes, avocado and tomatoes you can’t use canned tomatoes. You have to use fresh tomatoes. And like you said, adding more salt and pepper helps this salad taste better.
sumi salad comes from the Japanese word for salt, and as you can imagine, it is really hard to keep fresh and fresh tasting once you eat it. If you haven’t tried sumi salad and you’ve tried many other salad recipes, I’d recommend you try it.
I think the first time I tried it, I was a bit shocked because it was so strong. I was a bit afraid if I ate it, I would be eating something that was a bit too strong (salt) and if I ate that I would have a headache. But then I was pleasantly surprised. As it turns out, sumi salad has a lot of different versions, I think the original Japanese version was the best, but the original Japanese version was very strong.
I used to be a fan of sumi salad, but since moving to Japan, I can’t find it. But luckily, there are a ton of other salads that may be just as good. I think if you want to eat something that is more like sumi salad, try sumi salad with shiso, katsuobushi, hiyashi, or shishitos, or sumi salad w/ seaweed, seaweed, and seawater.
Sumi salad with seaweed and seawater may be my favorite.
